Surrender it is. Every year, I go kicking and screaming into winter. After years in golden Southern California, where the warmth and sunshine felt endless, I chose to return to the Northeast for family and the memories I didn’t want to miss.
Still, winter challenges me—the cold, the dark, the longing for light. Each year, My friend Judith holds her virtual Dark Of Winter Yoga Classes and she helped me to better appreciate the beauty of a time to withdraw, curl up and find internal center. I take that in and find some level of acceptance, but still I crave the light and the warmth.
But then, the snow finally arrives, and like a child awaiting a snow day, my spirit lifts. Yesterday, I strapped on my snowshoes and wandered the quiet beauty of the neighborhood golf course, with sledding kids and the hush of snow all around. I have released my resistance. It feels good
Winter, for all its challenges, teaches me presence. It’s a time for reflection, for retreating and for finding joy in the stillness. Though I wait for the buds and boys of summer to arrive, I can still honor this season—its quiet, its beauty, and finally a dancing fire.
Are you ready to release something you are resisting? I'd love to hear.
